A Brief History

In 1914 the City of Atlanta put together a $50,000 bond offering to develop a piece of property purchased from the DuPont family. It became “Northview Cemetery,” created to inter prisoners who passed away during their incarceration.

Eventually the name was changed to Crestlawn, because the land encompassed one of the highest points in Atlanta. Its management was taken over by a private operator in an era when 99% of families chose traditional burial.

At one time Crestlawn handled over 900 traditional burials a year, including some of the most notable names among Atlanta's elite. The trolley line down Chattahoochee Avenue even had a “Crestlawn Stop,” where families stepped off on Sundays after church to visit their family's burial estate.

Today Crestlawn handles roughly 250 services a year, and it struggles financially to keep the gardens in a way that dignifies the heritage of those who have left us.
